OH LUCKY STAR: A Place In The Sun (Rhythm Ace) +++(+) Oh Lucky Star is a nice instrumental band who could have been taken right out of a Quentin Tarantino picture, but they’re from Stockholm and include members such as Tommy Galento, The Golden Greek and Rob Stick. At least Tommy Galento I recognize as the man behind the music for the cult-movie “Plötsligt i Vinslöv” by Malin Skjöld, and as the creator of numerous records filled with peculiar, beautiful and interesting music. All this under the name of Galento. Oh Lucky Star isn't really that mysterious, even if their music has to be seen as pretty odd these days. A strong vibe of surf is evident, and a bit Link Wray. Then the references add up pretty nicely. The British 70’s band Savoy Brown, the American giant of jazz and rock Larry Coryell and actually the Cramps. It´s all done with a great sense of punk-attitude and a great musical humour. But it is not only being difficult-cool, as in the wonderful “Ora et labora” and “Europe vs America”, It´s sometimes even like jangle pop from the 50’s, as in the opening song “Jump in”. It gets really beautiful in “A white elephant in my room” and in ”Mister major minor” where a jazzier angle is pointed out. All in all: “A place in the sun” isn't at all a bad title.
